Honesty
I've just been reading an article on techniques that you can use when you forget what you were going to say. These include repeating what you've just said in a different way, shifting the attention back to the audience and having a standard phrase or anecdote that you can use to buy you time.

How about just smiling and admitting that you forgot where you were? It's what we would do in conversation and I've seen it said many times in training or presentations. If anything it builds rapport.

Honesty is simply the best policy.

I saw someone deliver a workshop in his shirtsleeves, apologising that he'd taken off his jacket because ink had leaked from his pen into the pocket. He received more warmth from the audience at that moment than during any of the 'training'.
