Training as a PR strategy
Barclays Bank has created a Compliance Career Academy in partnership with Cambridge University to improve staff training as it tries to improve its reputation after a series of scandals.

Chairman David Walker said; "Compliance has not been seen as a serious enough specialist activity. Our track record in culture has not been good. It's important for us all to have a concept of culture, conduct and compliance."

Was it really lack of training that was the root cause of these scandals?

Skills shortages
I'm hearing this lovely phrase doing the rounds. Now that business is picking up again economies in the west are complaining of skills shortages.

The problem is that companies don't build skills in the naturally quieter times of the economic cycle. The paradox is that shareholders are rewarded for cutting costs and offshoring tasks where the skill is developed and stays in that country, regardless of whether it makes sense.

So, here we are again with skills shortages.

Army to train long term unemployed
A plan for the Army to provide one month training sessions to the long term unemployed may be extended nationally.

A pilot project run in Telford and Stoke "aimed at building self-esteem and skills" has been completed by 31 people and produced "excellent results", according to the Army.

Entertaining Training
Apparently NASA show the film Armageddon to new recruits and ask them to spot the mistakes, or incorrect procedures. So far they are up to 168.

I think that's a great way to teach people. It's entertaining, engaging and it will cause discussions about important issues. Learning is also effective when delivered in a visual way, so this approach is ticking a lot of boxes.

Training ROI
I've seen lots of articles talking about training ROI and how it's going to be one of the hot topics this year. A survey by Ashridge Business School has found that 43% of HR professionals believe that ROI is impossible to measure by any objective measures.

I suspect that this is true and that any attempt to measure it will be a huge waste of time.

If you're any good at your job don't you simply know what training is worth doing?
