Government now against universities?
A government backed website http://www.notgoingtouni.co.uk claims to give students a broader range of options, setting out choices including apprenticeship and vocational training. It's free to download and contains a foreword by Nick Bowles, Secretary of State for Education.

Is it a good idea to brand this in such a way that it sounds like a war cry or something to be proud of, or is that sending out the wrong message?

Government scheme training fraud
Police have arrested dozens of people in Spain over a fraud estimated at between 20 and 40 million euros for training that was never delivered as part of a 3 billion euro government run vocational training programme.

90 arrest warrants in total have been issued and around 1,000 people and companies are currently under investigation.

The money comes from European budgets. It seems that any time that a large scale training scheme is run by any form of government organisation fraud is rife.

Capita to be investigated by The Cabinet Office
12 companies providing services to the government through outsourcing firm Capita has formed a consortium to complain that the company paid invoices late, took excessive admin fees and used non-compete clauses to stop them from doing government work without their permission.

Many will be familiar with these nasty tricks and the feeling that you can't do anything because you'll lose work. Forming a consortium is an interesting tactic.

As a result The Cabinet Office are investigating.

Using comedy in training
A company called Improv Asylum is introducing comedy into training programmes to increase engagement. You see similar stories in press releases several times a year, it's not a new idea, but it tends not to take off in its own right.

Is there a gap in the market because training tends to be a bit dry and not memorable? I don't think so, I think that the best trainers know when to introduce comedy as well as all of the other emotions at an appropriate time. Focusing on comedy isn't necessary.

Training isn't always the issue
I've seen another hidden camera exposé of care home staff with the headline 'Care home staff need training, not hidden cameras'.

There does seem to be a link between low paid jobs and inadequate training, but people who abuse patients aren't doing it because of lack of training. The two things aren't directly linked.

I have a number of family members who work in the care industry and, from what you sometimes see in the media, you'd think that abuse was rife. It isn't.

Is this a new challenge?

I can't imagine a Chinese politician saying this at this stage.

Gamification
As we head towards the end of 2014 we can look back on some of the buzzwords that were predicted to be important this year.

Has anyone seen any evidence of 'Gamification' in training?

BYOD
'Bring Your Own Device' is becoming a buzzword in training. This may be an iPad or even a smartphone. mLearning is another current buzzword - mobile learning using your devices.

One the plus side people are intuitively connected to their own devices and they are potentially more likely to follow up on learning. The downsides include different platforms and unreliability; if people are told to BYOD and don't what is the effect?

Generally I think it has to be a good thing for training, it's a trend that's probably best embraced than avoided. It's good because it is a 'bottom up' demand driven thing that suits employees, rather than a 'top down' imposed thing and therefore likely to drive higher engagement in the training. Eventually the platform issues will reduce...

The downside is that the variables increase and with that so does the risk. For example, if a device has a lot of apps and photos on it then it will perform less well than a cleaner device. If performance is an issue then it's not a good idea. You can scale back costs in training in all sorts of ways but sometimes you just have to ask if it's worth doing it at all if cost is such an issue.
