EU VAT MOSS / VAT MESS
Since 1/1/2015, people who sell digital products/services online are supposed to collect VAT at the EU customer country rate/s instead of the seller's.

But it's almost impossible to comply because the third-party platforms are not geared up for it, never mind most small businesses.

My online training course is on hold for this reason. How about you?

It reminds me of the Cookie fiasco of a couple of years ago. It caused chaos in the internet industry and then fizzled out like a damp squib.

Days before the cookie law was due to go live, they changed it to 'assume consent'.

Sadly, the EU VAT law won't fizzle out - we're battling for 28 nation states to agree to a threshold.

Khan Academy
I've just watched the video showing how their Knowledge Map works for learning Maths.

I love it!

How do you come down...
...after delivering a great session? On a post-event high and still filled with adrenaline, I ended up cleaning the bathroom. That brought me back to earth with a bump.
183 weeks ago, by James
That's always a problem, particularly if it's been an evening event. I usually find the drive home helps but there's a definite adrenaline buzz.

How to train groups
Interesting blog post - what do you think?

I'm not sure there's a rule that it follows that pattern but it reminds me of Bruce Tuckman's Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing model which covers longer term team development.

If there are conflicts I do think that a good facilitator will encourage them to come out early in the day so they can be resolved. The last thing you want is the can of worms to be opened just before everyone leaves.

Career advice
I didn't get much career advice at school. When I told them I wanted to be a writer, they said: "Writers starve in garrets. Be a teacher. There's a shortage of those."

I didn't want to be a teacher, so I trained as a journalist and made a career as a copywriter.

These days, one-third of my income comes from training people how to do it themselves, so maybe I've become a teacher after all.

How did you get into training?
185 weeks ago, by James
I don't remember getting any useful career advice. I chose the subjects that I wanted to rather than having any specific strategy. I read in today's news that 1 in 5 skilled jobs have to go to immigrant candidates because students lack the right qualifications and 'shun' maths and science.

It seems that some students are still choosing what they want to do on a whim rather than having a strategy.

Chop chop busy busy work work bang bang
I was booked for more training in June this year than any other month previously. July and August were quieter, but September has gone mad!

Has everyone suddenly unleashed their training budget? Has the recession actually finished? Are you seeing this too?
191 weeks ago, by Pj
Yes, things are definitely picking up. Much less procrastination and a sense of people starting things.

Great news!

Mixed for us but a bit more positive, certainly.

How are you doing your marketing? Has that changed?
